The Tritiya of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Saavan is celebrated as Hartalika Teej or Hariyali Teej. It is a major festival of married women. In the year 2020, Hariyali Teej will be celebrated on Thursday, 23 July.
Maa Parvati took 107 births to get Lord Shankar as her husband. Finally, in the harsh tenacity of Maa Parvati and her 108th birth, God accepted Parvati Ji as his wife. Since then it is believed that by observing this fast, Maa Parvati is pleased and blesses the husbands with longevity. At the wish of Parvati Ji, Shiva Ji blessed that whichever virgin girl will keep this fast, the obstacles in her marriage will be removed.
Women do Nirjala (without water) fast and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati Ji. On this day, along with the fast, the story of the fast is heard in the evening. Worshiping Goddess Parvati Ji increases wealth, marriage and child happiness.
On the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Saavan month, women do special worship of Shiva-Parvati. This festival is mainly celebrated in North India. On this day, women worship Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. Women do Nirjala fasts. This fast is said to be harder than Karva Chauth. On this day, women spend the whole day without food and water, and on the second day, in the morning after bathing and worshiping, they take food. Married women fast for their husband's longevity. On this day, the women's goods and sweets are sent to their house from their maternal home.
On the day of Hariyali Teej, women do sixteen adornments and do Nirjala fast. This is followed by the worship of Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva. The story of Teej is heard at the end of the puja. At the end of the story, the women wish Maa Gauri for a long life of her husband. This is followed by a celebration at home and bhajans and folk dances are performed.
On this day there is a custom of green clothes, green chunari, mehndi, swinging. Swing takes place everywhere. In this festival women also dress in red, pink chunari, sing songs, apply henna, make up, and dance. Fairs are held at many places on the day of Hariyali Teej and the Savari of Maa Parvati is taken out with great pomp.
