Ugadi or also known as Samvatsaradi Ugadi is a major festival in South India. It is celebrated as New Year in states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This festival is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra month. According to the Gregorian calendar, this festival comes in March or April. In the year 2020 Ugadi festival will be celebrated in Wednesday 25 March.
The festival of Ugadi is one of the most important festivals of South India, it is celebrated to mark the arrival of New Year. This festival of Ugadi comes at a time when the spring season is at its peak in India and at this time farmers also get a new crop and because India is an agricultural country. Therefore, this festival has been celebrated by farmers since ancient times as a thank you to God for a new crop.

People are very enthusiastic about this festival and on this day, they wake up in the morning and starts cleaning their houses, after cleaning the houses, people decorate the gate of their houses with mango leaves.

This drink called Pachhadi is made in the pot by mixing things like new tamarind, mango, coconut, Neem flowers and jaggery. Apart from drinking this drink, people are also distributed in the neighborhood. On the day of Ugadi, in Karnataka, apart from pachadi, one more thing is also eaten by the peoples, which is known as Bevu-Bella.
It is made from a mixture of jaggery and Neem, which gives us the knowledge in our life that in life we have to go through both experiences of sweetness and bitterness.
On this day many delicious dishes like Puranpoli and Laddus are prepared in the houses. On this day people also invite people around them to eat in their homes. On the celebration of Ugadi, people offer jasmine flowers and garlands on the idols of the Lord and especially worship Brahma ji.
According to mythology, on this day, Lord Brahma Ji started the creation of the universe and on this day Lord Vishnu took a Matasya avatar. It is believed that the coronation of Lord Sri Rama took place on the day of Ugadi.
Along with this, in earlier times it was a special occasion for the farmers because at this time they used to get a new crop, which they used to sell and buy their necessities. This is the reason that this festival of Ugadi is very respected by farmers even today.
