With escalating land prices and scarcity of available land if has almost become a dream to acquire a suitable piece of land and construct a house according to the principles of Vastu. As a result an extremely large section of our society resides in apartments which may be developed by the government or by private builders.

Benefit of Vastu Shastra can also be enjoyed by people living in these apartments. Through proper utilisation of forces of nature they can also lead healthy, wealthy, prosperous and happy lives. Some guidelines are as follows :

• Soil of the land where the apartments are to be constructed should be checked and tested.
• The flats should be square or rectangular.
• The plot should not have any extensions or reductions on any side.
• The Brahmasthan of the plot should be open, neat and clean.
• A park or a temple can be made at that place.
• Underground water tank, swimming pool or lift should not be made in this place.
• The plot should be situated in the main cardinal directions.
• The main entrance and the compound gate should be made in an auspicious place.
  Entrance is considered to be auspicious in :
  • Eastern Ishan (East of Northeast)
  • Northern Ishan (North of Northeast)
  • East
  • North
  • Southern Agneya (South of Southeast)
  • Western Vayavya
  Entrance is considered to be inauspicious in :
  • Southern Nairritya (South of Southwest)
  • Western Nairritya (West of Southwest)
  • Eastern Agneye (East of Southeast)
  • Northern Vayavya (North of Northwest)
• The guard room door should be towards the East and the North.
• There should be no obstruction like an electric pole or tree or a temple in front of the main gate.
• Open space should be left in the Northeast. Pipeline for water, booster pump, underground water tank, bore well or swimming pool should be in the Northeast.
• Lawns, plants and parking etc. should also be towards the Northeast, while large tall trees should be planted in the South, West or Southwest.
• Apartments or flats should not be L shaped. If they happen to be of this shape then open space should be left in the Northeast and construction should be done on the square or the rectangular part. This will be beneficial for health and prosperity.
• If more construction is done in North and East and open space is left in the Southwest or in the Southeast, then it would be harmful.
• The overhead water tank should be placed in the west direction on the terrace and there should be no hole in it. Water tank should not be placed in the Northeast or Southeast corners or in the centre.
• The generator or the electric supply should be in the Southeast of the plot. In each flat the electric switch board should be fixed in the Southeast direction at the floor level.
• The water supply within the flats of the apartment should be from the Northeast. This pleases Goddess Lakshmi and she showers honour and status on the resident. This is an established fact. The person is blessed with children and grand children with Gods blessings. If the slope of the floor is also towards Northeast then there is gain of knowledge and wisdom and continuous prosperity.
• In any residential complex if there is a pond, lake or flowing river towards its North then prosperity of the residents grows day by day. Tube well, underground water Tank and taps in this direction really awakes the fortune of the residents and they prosper continuously.
• Mountains, hills or large rocks towards the Southwest of the residential complex is very beneficial for the residents.
• The upper stories of the building should be constructed in such a way that the morning Sun reaches all the flats and they get good ventilation in all the rooms.
• In multistoried apartments, irrespective of the number of floors, it is necessary to have the height of the upper floors slightly less than that of the lower floor. The height of the upper floor should be at least 1/12 less than the lower floor. This maintains equilibrium between the weight of the building and the earth's gravity.
• In U shaped apartments, it is better to have the North, East and Northeast open.
